The main role of manganese ingot in steelmaking are oxidation, desulfurization and alloy elements.

(1) Use as a reducing agent

In order to improve the quality of steel in the steelmaking process, carbon and sulfur from iron water. The simpler process is the oxidation. However, some iron element is oxidized together with the impurities to form the ferrous oxide. The solubility of ferrous oxide in the steel water increases the oxygen content in the steel water. The increase in the oxygen content will adversely affect the performance of the steel. Therefore, steel has strict requirements for oxygen content, generally not more than 0.02%, or even more strict. Therefore, the excess oxygen should be removed during the steelmaking process. Manganese is an active metal that is chemically more active than iron. When manganese is added to molten steel, manganese will react with iron oxide to form oxide slag insoluble in molten steel, float on the surface of molten steel, and reduce the oxygen content in molten steel.

Although the reduction capacity of manganese in molten steel is lower than that of other elements (such as calcium, aluminum and silicon), it is still welcomed by steel enterprises because of its convenient production and relatively low price. Fer-manganese alloy reduction is an ideal reducing agent. Due to the weak reduction capacity of manganese, it can adjust the oxygen content in the steel without removing excessive oxygen and boiling. At the same time, the presence of manganese can also improve the reduction capacity of silicon and aluminum, because the reduction product polymetallic oxides and other oxides (such as si02) can form compounds with low melting point, which is conducive to the removal from steel water.

(2) Be used as a desulfurizer

Sulfur exists in the steel water as iron sulfide. High sulfur content in steel is easy to cause the thermal embrittlement of steel and reduce the mechanical properties of steel. Therefore, the sulfur content should be controlled in the steelmaking process. Manganese and sulfur bind more strongly than iron and sulfur. After the addition of manganese alloy, the manganese sulfide with high melting point is easily formed together with the manganese in the molten steel and converted into slag, thus reducing the sulfur content in the steel and improving the plasticity and rolling capacity of the steel.

(3) Alloy elements

Manganese can enhance ferrites and refined beads, improve the strength, hardening, hardness and wear resistance of steel, thus becoming an important alloy element of all kinds of steel. For example, the addition of 0.8% -1.7% manganese to low alloy steel can increase the strength of the steel by 20% -30% more than that of ordinary carbon steel.
